The 2021 Illinois high school football season is about over and the stateline area saw some elite athletes battle on the gridiron over the season.

We've been covering area high school football all year here on 1440 WROK and have seen some of the players that, very deservedly, made the All-State squad, but the most electric athlete we saw all year didn't make the list.

Hononegah's Bryce Goodwine.

We might have seen better running backs this year. There were probably some receivers with more ability. I don't think I saw him give up a play on defense as a defensive back in any Hononegah game we covered. He was the best kicker we saw all year and was consistent as the Indian's kick returner.

What we didn't see all season was anyone playing all those positions in the same game and doing every job at an above average to elite level.

Maybe that's what kept Goodwine off the All-State team, he just does too much.

WTVO did a nice piece on him before the season.

He also made one of the most clutch plays of the year when his last second field goal perserved the Indian's undefeated season when they played Boylan.

Goodwine might not have been the best player at any single position but we didn't see any player throughout the year that meant more to their team.

Here is who did make the All-State team from the Stateline area.

  • Adrian Palos RB/LB - Harlem
  • Chandler Binkley RB/LB - Byron
  • Brody Mahon TE/LB - Lena-Winslow
  • Matthew Beltran RB/DB - Forreston
  • Will Doetch WR - North Boone
  • Hunter Hoffman QB - Durand/Pecatonica

Congrats to all who made the team.

Our final high school football broadcast of the season will be this Saturday when the Byron Tigers travel to Immaculate Conception in Elmhurst for a Class 3A semifinal matchup, with the winner advancing to the State Final next Friday in DeKalb. Pregame starts at 3:45PM with the kickoff at 4PM.

Thanks to all the schools that hosted us through the year, it was great to be able to bring high school football back to the WROK airwaves.
