Attention future Auburn basketball players, if you were thinking of wearing number 23, you'll have to pick a different number.

That's because Auburn officially retired Fred's former jersey number 23, in a ceremony Saturday afternoon before their matchup against Freeport.

People from Rockford were the first to know how good Van Vleet was before he lead a Wichita State team to the final four and eventually found his role as a backup point guard for the Toronto Raptors.

As a senior for Auburn, Fred averaged more than 20 points a game while leading the Knights to a third-place finish in the IHSA state tournament.

The honor couldn't have gone to a better guy. If you talk to anyone who had any contact with Van Vleet, you'll hear unanimous praise for the man. Humble, grateful, and polite are usually the adjectives used before even getting to his basketball abilities.

Fred is currently averaging 8 points and 3 assists per game for the playoff-bound Toronto Raptors and is becoming a key member of the team in just his second year in the league.

Congrats Fred! You make the area proud.
