Lena-Winslow now leads with the most football state championships winning their fourth Friday at Northern Illinois University at Huskie Stadium.
The Panthers finished the season unbeaten for the and won the title for the second time in three years, Lena-Winslow set a record for most points in a 1A championship game whipping Mowequa Central AM 58-20 Friday, South Beloit had held the record scoring 50 points in the title game in 2002. Sean Ormiston the Panthers senior running back set a 1A championship game record with five rushing touchdowns and six total touchdowns. He passed Lena-Winslow's Rahveon Valentine from 2017 with an NUIC new career-best 4,749 rushing yards and 67 touchdowns. For the season Ormiston racked up 1,954 yards and 28 touchdowns at a lofty 9.2 yards per carry.
The Central AM coach agreed this could be the best 1A football state champion in state history and could beat and play with any 1A through 4A school this year. The Central quarterback added he though the Lena-Winslow line was 10 times better than anything they have ever faced. It was the 21st state championship won by the best small-school conference in the state, the NUIC. 16 of the 21 titles have been won by four schools. The Panthers now have the most ever state titles in the NUIC with four. Aquin, Dakota, Galena and Forreston all are next with three each. Stockton has two and the most state games in with six. Eastland/Pearl City, Orangeville, and Amboy have all won one each. Lena-Winslow also won the title in 2010, 2013, 17 and 19. The Panthers coach Ric Arand now has the most coaching state titles in the NUIC with four. He is tied with Stockton coach John O'Boyle with the most state final appearances with four each. Arand passed Jerry Lano of Dakota with most state championship with four. Lano is next at three. It is hard to compare past teams. All the state champions have been tough, this year's Panthers do add to the legacy of the NUIC.
The Panthers defense led by Iowa bound Isaiah Bruce was to tough. And on offense Ormiston had touchdowns runs of 23, 35 where he surpassed the NUIC career rushing record, one, five and 26 yards. His sixth and final touchdown was a 46-yard interception for a pick-six and a 50-12 and a 50-12 lead. Sophomore quarterback Luke Benson hooked up with Kade Chrisman. The first Benson to Chrisman touchdown was good for 66 yards and the first lead of the game. Benson then found Chrisman later for a 21 yard TD strike to set off a running clock and a 58-12 lead.
