Before looking at the numbers in a new study by personal finance website WalletHub, my own guess at our state ranking was way off. Chance are, yours was too.
It's crazy popular, but we know that some of you haven't yet made the trek downtown to enjoy the Rockford City Market. That's okay, maybe you've been busy. However, with all the great happenings each and every Friday through September 29th, how about making this the year you check it out?
We've said it before, and it will be said many more times: "Illinois is too hard on itself." To be fair, many times we're hard on ourselves for good reasons--high property taxes, ineffective state government, massive pension debts, crime, corruption, to name just a few. But even with those negatives, it seems that Illinois is still fun. And, a lot more fun than many other states.

As I sit in front of my keyboard, The Chicago Cubs are sitting pretty in the National League Central Division with a 71-41 record, and a 12-game lead over the St. Louis Cardinals. When you've been a Cubs fan for over 50 years like I have, it hasn't been this much fun in ages.
Anyone who makes their home here in Rockford has undoubtedly heard this sentence (or a variation on it): "There's nothing to do in Rockford." Well, that's just wrong. Rockford has an abundance of places to go and things to do.
