[LISTEN] Rockford Basketball Royalty Congratulate Paul Perrone On Win Number 500
We had the honor at 1440 WROK to be able to broadcast Friday night's NIC-10 Girl's matchup between Boylan and East.
Boylan's 74-20 win was never in doubt. East is in the middle of rebuilding their program and Boylan has been at the top of the conference for over a decade. The Titans girl's basketball success was why we were there as their head coach Paul Perrone was looking for his 500th career varsity win.
The school made sure the Coach Perrone was presented with this plaque after the game:
And given a game ball:
His team celebrated his win with his team, and like a good coach, he was already planning for their next game.
Broadcasting the game courtside game us another way to celebrate Paul Perrone's legacy and achievement in the Stateline area. We invited some of his old coaching cohorts to give us some stories about Perrone's journey through the coaching ranks.
Current Assistant Coach - Joe Sutherland
First up, we had his assistant Joe Sutherland join us for a pregame interview. Joe and his wife Bianca have been a part of Perrone's program for a while now. The Titans will be in good hands if Perrone ever decides to retire.
Former Harlem Boy's Basketball Coach - Don Tresemer
After that. Don Tresemer joined us for the first quarter of play. Tresemer was the longtime boy's basketball coach at Harlem, who gave Perrone his first job at a NIC-10 school as a member of his staff.
Former Boylan Boy's Basketball Coach - Steve Goers
The second quarter we were joined by former Boylan Boy's head coach Steve Goers. Goers and Perrone spent a lot of time together in the Titan's basketball program. Also Steve did a great job of calling some play-by-play. I might call him in the future if we need a sub.
Former Harlem Boy's Basketball Coach - Jim Leix
Leix came to Harlem the year after Perrone took the head girl's coaching position. Similar to Goers, Leix and Perrone shared basketball duties at Harlem for close to a decade.
Former Player - Aminata Yanni
Yanni was a star player for Perrone at Harlem who went on to play at the University of Illinois and then professionally in Europe. It was great getting a player's perspective on the Hall of Fame coach.
Then finally we were able to speak with the man himself as Coach Perrone joined us after the game to reflect on his achievement.
Congrats coach, it's been great seeing you achieve so much on and off the court here in the Rockford area. Good luck, hunting down a few more wins before you call it quits.
