With the weather being warm and sunny (especially for December 10th), today would be a perfect day to say goodbye to Elliot golf course. And, you can do it for the low, low price of...free.

Elliot Golf Course has been a part of the Rockford golfing landscape for 52 years, but that run is coming to an end. The Rockford Park District Board of Commissioners recently approved their 2020 Action Plan Update, which includes closing Elliot Golf Course for the 2021 season and beyond.

The Rockford Park District says that they just didn't feel right about closing the golf course without giving the Rockford area golfing community a chance to say goodbye to the course that many of us have played for decades.

I have fond memories of playing Elliot with my daughter Molly when she was a high school golf team member. Okay, to be honest, getting my butt absolutely kicked all over the course by a 16-year old might not be the "fond" part, but the time spent out there with her most certainly was.

With Mother Nature in full cooperation mode, today will be your last chance to get out and shoot anywhere from 75 to 125, depending on your skill level with the clubs and/or the eraser on your scoring pencil.

Here's how it works:

  • You can play Elliot Golf Course for free up until 4pm today
  • Flag sticks are back in
  • No tee time needed
  • No carts are out
  • The Clubhouse will remain closed

The Rockford Park District also asks that you abide by the State of Illinois’ COVID-19 Tier 3 Resurgence Mitigation requirements. These include not gathering in groups of 10 or more, keeping social distancing, and wearing a face mask. Golfers must check in at the starter desk before playing.

The clock is definitely ticking on this one, so use today's beautiful weather to take advantage of the opportunity to say goodbye to Elliot Golf Course.
