If you are or were an AT&T Customer, check your mailbox, you may have a refund waiting for you. Why? You got crammed!

If got a check in the mail from the FTC, it most likely is real.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) announced that last Thursday, it sent more than $88 million to AT&T customers who were charged by other companies for “premium text message services.” These charges amounted to up to an additional $9.99 a month for many customers.

These unwanted services included:

  • ringtones
  • wallpapers
  • text message subscriptions

If you are a customer, you bill may have had these extra charges, even though you never agreed to the charges or service. This practice is known as cramming. AT&T users in Illinois and all 50 states were affected.

More than 2.7 million people will get refunds. The FTC says that that is more than in any case administered by the FTC to date.

For those affected:

  • Current AT&T customers will get a credit on their bill within the next 75 days.
  • Former AT&T customers will receive a check. The first round of checks was mailed on Thursday.
