This year's national Golden Gloves tournament was held in Lafayette, Louisana. To win the national title, Martinez had to win four fights. He did so in dominant fashion, with all five judges picking him in all four fights.

Martinez is the first Rockford-area boxer to win a Golden Gloves title since Kenny Gould in 1987. Gould went on to win a bronze medal in the 1988 Olympics.

When on the Stateline Sports Hour, Martinez talked about meeting Gould.

Martinez clinched the title Saturday night by beating Xavier Rodriguez of Texas.
