Viscosity Tubes Exhibit in Rockford’s Discovery Center: A STEM Adventure for Kids
The Discovery Center Museum in Rockford, Illinois has recently unveiled a new hands-on science exhibit, thanks to the support of Thermo Fisher Scientific. The exhibit, called the Viscosity Tubes exhibit, explores the concept of viscosity in a fun and engaging way for children of all ages.
Understanding Viscosity through the Viscosity Tubes Exhibit
The Viscosity Tubes exhibit is made up of six tubes filled with liquids of varying thicknesses or viscosities, in distinct colors. Guests can control and compare the movement of bubbles through the liquids. The exhibit demonstrates how thicker liquids (those with a higher viscosity) provide more resistance than thinner liquids. When a button is pushed, air bubbles are released into the liquid. By comparing the rate at which the bubbles move, guests can see the differences in the viscosities of the liquids, thereby learning to identify which liquids are most and least viscous.
Supporting STEM Education
The exhibit showcases and celebrates the culture of innovation, science, and inspiration at Thermo Fisher Scientific in the Rockford Region. “We are thrilled to sponsor this important viscosity exhibit. Our partnership with the Discovery Center helps us fulfill our goals of supporting our community and helping build the next generation of scientists” said Brian Webb, Director of Protein Biology R&D at Thermo Fisher Scientific.
Discovery Center Executive Director Sarah Wolf expresses gratitude towards Thermo Fisher Scientific saying “They understand the importance of STEM education for children and want to be involved in igniting an interest in science and STEM careers.”
