The Discovery Center Museum in Rockford, Illinois has recently unveiled a new hands-on science exhibit, thanks to the support of Thermo Fisher Scientific. The exhibit, called the Viscosity Tubes exhibit, explores the concept of viscosity in a fun and engaging way for children of all ages.

Understanding Viscosity through the Viscosity Tubes Exhibit

The Viscosity Tubes exhibit is made up of six tubes filled with liquids of varying thicknesses or viscosities, in distinct colors. Guests can control and compare the movement of bubbles through the liquids. The exhibit demonstrates how thicker liquids (those with a higher viscosity) provide more resistance than thinner liquids. When a button is pushed, air bubbles are released into the liquid. By comparing the rate at which the bubbles move, guests can see the differences in the viscosities of the liquids, thereby learning to identify which liquids are most and least viscous.
