The other day, I looked at my wife, Amy, and said, "I'm thinking about a puppy." After a moment, she sighed and told me she had been thinking about new carpeting. Worried that this discussion would rapidly get away from me, I went for the kill: a photo of the Weimaraner puppy I had been admiring.

That's pretty much all it took...We now have Lucy, and the carpet is going to have to wait.

Having two children aged 20 and 16, Amy had figured our days, weeks and months of following a living creature around our house while constantly saying "No! No! No!" had long since passed. As anyone who has gone through the housebreaking, feeding, biting, whining and messes of being a parent can tell you, it's pretty much the same thing with a puppy. Although, Amy hasn't told me to watch my language nearly as much around the dog as she did with the kids
