Illinois’ Walmart Apple Juice Recall Due To Arsenic Has Expanded
Announcing that a certain number of pounds or cases of a food product are being recalled by a company for various reasons isn't something new, but we've gotten several food product recalls lately that then expand further and add more pounds or cases to the overall recall.
We've seen it recently with vegetables that were recalled over listeria worries, and we've seen the same thing with deli meats (same reason, listeria) when millions of pounds were added to the already recalled meats.
I certainly don't think the third time is any sort of charm, but here we go with another product recall that has expanded the amount of product from the first announcement of a recall. In this case...it's cases.
I Know We've Had Product Recalls Ever Since We Started Packaging Foods, But It's Been Pretty Crazy Lately
We've been warned of the dangers of a certain brand of deli meat being possibly contaminated with listeria. The recall involving those meat products covered over 7 million pounds of various meats that were produced at a single location. Several deaths have potentially resulted from ingestion of the recalled products.
Then, there's the ongoing recall involving vegetables for the very same reason that the deli meat was recalled in such huge numbers: worries over listeria contamination there, too.
A week ago, 84 tons of frozen chicken were recalled because of metal wire being found in the product, and less than two months ago, over 100 brands (covering millions of individual cans) of canned coffee products were recalled because of concerns over botulism contamination.
But wait, there's more.
Walmart At First Recalled Almost 10,000 Cases Of Apple Juice Sold In Stores Throughout The US Because Samples Were Found To Contain Potentially Harmful Levels Of Inorganic Arsenic---But Now, That Number Has Gone Way Up
That 10,000 cases number has now risen to 133,500 cases of apple juice produced by Refresco Beverages US Inc. and sold under multiple brand names at a variety retailers including Aldi, Walgreens and BJs.
Illinois is one of the states where the recalled apple juice was sold, along with Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, Michigan, Mississippi, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Vermont, West Virginia, Washington DC and Puerto Rico.
This product recall started on August 15th, but the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) gave the recall a more urgent classification of Class II Recall a little over a week later.
A Class II recall is "issued on products that have a lower chance of causing major injuries or death, but where there is still the possibility of serious enough adverse events to have irreversible consequences."
Here's what you're looking for in your fridge or pantry, and as always, if you find some of the product(s) do not consume them. Throw them out, or return them to your place of purchase for a full refund:
