For those keeping score at home, this is the third recall in Illinois and throughout the country in just a few months for products that may have been contaminated with listeria:

  • First, over the summer months, we had the Boar's Head deli meat recall that involved over 7 million pound of deli meat from a Boar's Head processing plant in Jarratt, Virginia. The listeria outbreak from those products killed 10 people and caused nearly 60 people to be hospitalized. That processing facility is being permanently closed.
  • Next, it was the BrucePac recall of almost 12 million pounds of meat and poultry that had been produced in an Oklahoma plant, after product testing pointed to the presence of listeria in the products.
  • Then, last Friday, TreeHouse Foods, a company based in Oak Brook, Illinois, announced a voluntary recall of over 500 types of frozen waffles after their in-house testing discovered Listeria monocytogenes in the products. That recall was then expanded even further yesterday.

Over The Last Few Months, You've Probably Learned A Lot About Listeria Monocytogenes Due To The Constant Recalls, So You Know That It's Not Something You Want To Mess With

Food product recalls of this level are something that everyone should take seriously, because listeria can make you violently ill or much worse. The recall statement from TreeHouse Foods says it all:

TreeHouse Foods, Inc. is expanding its voluntary recall to include all products manufactured at one facility and still within their shelf-life. The recall is expanded to include frozen toaster waffle, Belgian waffle and pancake products, due to the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

Listeria monocytogenesis an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Listeria monocytogenesinfection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
