Stateline area officials are doing what they can to keep prescription medications out of the hands of addicts and out of the environment.

DeKalb police say their police department's prescription drug take-back programs have collected nearly 450 pounds of pills this year. According to the DeKalb Daily Chronicle:

...at a single-day event in September, the department collected more than 225 pounds of medication. The number is in addition to what's been dropped off in collection boxes in the lobby of the police department.

The idea of the programs is to prevent the misuse and abuse of prescription medications.

You might think it's OK to flush expired or unwanted medication down the toilet. However, Keep Northern Illinois Beautiful explains that the pills can be a source of pollution in wastewater and the sewage treatment plants are not designed to deal with drugs.
