If we just ignored February 29th (or, Leap Day), we probably wouldn't notice at first. Then, after a number of years went by, we'd be confused by Christmas showing up in July, and the fact that summer would start taking place when we used to have winter.

We could probably get used to those differences in the calendar, but would we ever get used to not getting free stuff and discounts on Leap Day every year? Of course not.

Freebies and discounts on Leap Day are as traditional as....well...okay, they're not traditional at all. As a matter of fact, I didn't even know that celebrating Leap Day was a thing at all until I read about the offers being put forth by various Illinois businesses and chains.
