It's going to take volunteers some time to sort through about 17,000 pounds of freshly picked apples.

You've heard different businesses and organizations talk about "giving back to the community," or "paying it forward."

Well, the good folks at Tanners Orchard in Speer, Illinois, have done that in a big way by donating over 8 tons of apples to the Midwest Food Bank in Peoria.

Volunteers have been hard at work sorting and bagging the apples, which will be handed out this week.

How about it, Rockford area orchards? Got a few apples you can spare?
