One person is hospitalized in critical condition following a crash on Rockford's northwest side.

According to a press release, Rockford Police officers attempted a traffic stop on a 2006 Pontiac Grand Am Sunday night at North Rockton Avenue and Yonge Street. The vehicle immediately fled and officers did not pursue.

Minutes later, officials received a call for a traffic crash at North Court Street and Yonge Street. Upon arrival, officers discovered that this same Pontiac Grand Am had struck a tree. A sole occupant was extricated from the vehicle and transported to the hospital where he is listed in critical condition.

Officers spoke to several witnesses who said the car was traveling at an extremely high rate of speed before it left the roadway and struck a tree.

The name of the driver is not being released at this time.
