Proponents say a new law, signed by Governor Pritzker, will "level the playing field" between distilleries, breweries, and wineries.

The new law creates two licenses depending on how much a distillery produces. Those who provide less than 5,000 gallons of spirits can apply for an exemption to sell their product on their own.

Distillers say it levels the playing field, giving small distilleries the same opportunities as breweries and wineries.

“Having parity with the wine and craft beer industries creates new opportunities for us to increase sales, generate additional revenue and create more jobs in our community,” Jamie Walter, President and CEO of Whiskey Acres Distilling Company said in a release sent by Representative Tom Demmer (R-Dixon).

Rep. Demmer is a sponsor of the bill.

Illinois House Bill 2675 goes into effect immediately.
