Now that the 2020/2021 school year is almost finished, my girls are already talking about arranging summer play dates with their school friends. As a mom I have officially reached the point in my life where I am texting 'strangers' arranging park meet ups, and I am learning to embrace it.

In past summers, playdates frequently happened at Saturn Park on Garrett Lane in Rockford, because it is a big space to run around and play in. Sadly, that big playing space is no longer safe for our children, and the Rockford Park District has made the decision to close the playground at Saturn Park.

Lori Berkes-Nelson, the director for the Rockford Park District Foundation, recently told mystateline.com;

“It’s one of the dying wooden structures, last of that breed. We don’t put those in any longer because they don’t last, the wood doesn’t last.

Berkes-Nelson also said the Rockford Park District does plan to replace the playground, but with a non-existent budget to pay for it, they need the community's help.

Mystateline.com reports;

The foundation will now look for grant opportunities and private donors to contribute money towards a new playground.

Officials say it could cost in the range of $150,000 to complete the project. They’re hoping they’ll be able to come up with the money sooner rather than later.

I sure would hate to see that playground space stay closed and unloved. Anyone got a few thousand they could throw at the replacement fund? Contact the Rockford Park District to find out how you can help.
