It’s October and the Christmas Lights Are Turned on in DeKalb

Halloween is a few days away, and one town in Northern Illinois already has it's municipal Christmas lights installed and turned on and shining brightly.

The City of DeKalb is all lit up for Christmas in and around downtown. Now, I don't mean to sound like Scrooge, but c'mon, this is ridiculous! This is the first time I have seen a local town or city flip the switch before the Thanksgiving turkey was even purchased. Downtown DeKalb is already lit up for Christmas in this photo I took late Tuesday night.

Sure, if you've shopped at Walmart, Home Depot or Menard's, you have certainly encountered the early onslaught of yuletide merchandise cheer. In fact, Menard's has had theirs Christmas displays up for a few weeks now.

The early bombardment of Christmas is referred to as 'the Christmas creep', but when local municipalities are doing this, it is just too much, and there is no avoiding it.

Interestingly, as a result of complaints, Target recently announced it will "cool the Christmas creep." That is, it will keep in mind there is a holiday between Halloween and Christmas. It's called Thanksgiving.

In the month of November, Target has promised to have Thanksgiving signs and displays at it's store entrances. It will also market Thanksgiving meal preparation.

I like Christmas, but I really love Christmas when the holiday is actually celebrated near Christmas. A message to the government of DeKalb, how about not forgetting about Thanksgiving? Perhaps the city could display some turkeys, cornucopia, and other Thanksgiving items downtown
