If Tom Ricketts can bring a World Series trophy to Wrigley maybe he can make soccer actually popular.

ChicagoTribune - (Tom Ricketts) and Chicago developer Sterling Bay said they are forming a joint venture to bring a United Soccer League expansion team to the planned Lincoln Yards commercial real estate development along the Chicago River.

The proposed site is on the north side called Lincoln Yards. It was the property that was pitched to Amazon to build their headquarters on. That deal has since dissolved and I can't think of a better, more beautiful building to put in its place.

The Chicago Fire of the MLS attract fine crowds but if you've ever made the trek to Toyota Park you know that it's not exactly easy to get to. Being right on the river on the north side of town will make this a very attractive venue.

Tom Ricketts also knows that he needs to surround him with people that know what they're doing. That was the thinking around bringing Theo Epstein in to effectively run the Cubs, and that's turned out pretty well.

Add in the fact that the Cubs should be starting their own television network around 2021, the expected year that the soccer club would begin play, and the new team would already have a built-in broadcast network.

I'm not sure if America is ready to go soccer crazy, but if Tom Ricketts is willing to wager his own money on it, I'll definitely start to pay attention.
