Twenty years after the infamous McDonald's "Hot Coffee" lawsuit, a New Jersey woman is claiming Dunkin' Donuts owes her damages after she was burned by a spilled cup of hot cider.

Jennifer Fragoso, 24, said she has permanent scarring on her thighs...Fragoso said she was sitting in her car in the parking lot when the lid came loose and the drink tumbled over, the New Jersey Law Journal reports....Her lawyer told the publication that while Fragoso expected the cider to be hot, the "temperature exceeded reasonableness and posed a safety hazard.”

Here's a tip: don't put a hot beverage in between your thighs. Just an idea.

Apparently, she's not alone. In researching for the story, I found a recent article on a Los Angeles-area woman who's suing McDonald's for the same issue:

Paulette Carr [says] she was injured Jan. 12, 2012, after ordering the coffee at the drive-through window of a McDonald’s.

“The lid for the hot coffee was negligently, carelessly and improperly placed on the coffee cup … resulting in the lid coming off the top of the coffee at the window, causing the hot coffee to spill onto the plaintiff,” Carr said in the lawsuit.

The lawsuits might sound frivolous, but in case you forgot, the original lawsuit resulted in a $2.86 million jury verdict. A judge later reduced the amount to $640,000 before it was settled with McDonald's for an undisclosed figure.
