What's Up, Doc? is a weekly segment sponsored by MercyHealth.

This week's episode is "Varicose vein treatment."

Dr. Tracy Brito was today's guest.

Riley had the inside track on this week's guest. Dr. Brito treated him for varicose veins in the past. I remember him talking about the visit afterward and he was absolutely gushing with effusive praise for his doctor.

He was absolutely floored by her bedside manner. He said, and I'm paraphrasing here, it was one of the most enjoyable doctor visits of my life. He and I were very excited when we found out that Dr. Brito would be our guest this week.

I am happy to report that she did not disappoint. The dry-witted doctor from South Africa was passing out barbs to her former patient as much as she was thoughtfully answering our questions.

Varicose veins are something we all have heard of and can identify, but do you really know what they are? I know I didn't. Here's a short (30 seconds) video that would be a nice accompaniment to the above interview.

We also get into the different genetic and lifestyle causes of varicose veins and why some people get them and some don't. We also found out that all varicose veins are not created equal. Sometimes they require medical attention, sometimes, other than cosmetic reasons, no treatment is necessary.

What is necessary is getting them checked out to make sure they don't evolve into a bigger problem.

We thank Dr. Brito for joining us. We've had awesome guests pretty much every week on What's Up, Doc?, but her time on the show is something we'll remember for a while.

A new episode of What's Up, Doc? airs every Thursday morning at 8:35 on 1440 WROK.
