Sen. Mark Kirk Promoting Patrick Fitzgerald For U.S. Attorney General

U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) is promoting Patrick Fitzgerald to be the next attorney general of the United States.

Fitzgerald was U.S. attorney in Chicago for 11 years, crusading against political corruption in Illinois. The heads on his wall include governors George Ryan and Rod Blagojevich, and scores of other politicians and political operatives who were sent to prison with when he was at the helm. Kirk says he should be the president’s pick to replace Eric Holder, who is resigning.

“Patrick Fitzgerald is the finest Justice Department employee ever to get a paycheck from DOJ,” Kirk said. “I think Patrick Fitzgerald would be roundly supported in the Senate.”

Fitzgerald resigned as U.S. attorney in 2012, and is now in private law practice.

Kirk says the end of an eight-year administration is when there’s bound to be misbehavior, and an attorney general is needed who will deal with corruption in government. Kirk says the presence of Fitzgerald might even prevent some corruption.

The decision is up to the president, but his selection must be confirmed by the Senate.
