What do you get when you combine a great night of enjoying America's Pastime with a chance to learn how to survive a stroke? Glad you asked. You get "Strike Out Stroke" night, Saturday, June 20th, at Aviators Stadium, 4503 Interstate Blvd., in Loves Park.

Rockford's 3 hospitals, (OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center, Rockford Health System/Van Matre HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital, and SwedishAmerican-a Division of UW Health) are teaming up with the Rockford Aviators for a fun night of baseball and the opportunity to educate Rockford-area residents about how to survive a stroke.

From their press release:

A national stroke awareness campaign with professional baseball teams, Strike Out Stroke (www.strikeoutstroke.com) was born out of the non-profit organization, Retreat and Refresh Stroke Camp (www.strokecamp.org). Stroke Camps began 10 years ago by Marylee Nunley and her husband John, a stroke survivor, who recognized the need for a weekend of relaxation, pampering, support and camaraderie for stroke survivors, their families and their care-givers.

Since Stroke Camps’ humble beginning 10 years ago, it has grown to reach 12 states and continues to grow every camp season. According to Strike Out Stroke:
• Stroke is an emergency and brain attack, cutting off vital blood flow and oxygen to the brain.
• In the U.S., stroke is the fourth leading cause of death, killing over 133,000 people each year, and a leading cause of serious, long-term adult disability
• Approximately 795,000 strokes will occur this year, one occurring every 40 seconds, and taking a life approximately every four minutes.

Plenty of volunteers from all 3 hospitals will be there, with free blood pressure screenings and information about signs of a stroke and the symptoms that come with a stroke. Plus, if you're among the first 250 people to get the free blood pressure screening, they'll reward you with a really cool "Strike Out Stroke" seat cushion.
