One of my favorite writers, tweeters, and commentators is Charles C. W. Cooke of National Review. Looking back, it appears we started talking to him on the show just after he arrived here in the U.S. (in case you couldn't tell from his accent, Charles is not from around here). Since then he wrote an incredible piece for NR on his love for the country, titled "My American Dream," which is available for a whole quarter. Go ahead, it's worth the 25 cents.

Recently Charles attended and covered the NRA Annual Meeting in Indianapolis. Despite all the guns present, he somehow managed to escape unharmed.

We asked Charles why the NRA has been so successful in its efforts, specifically over the past few years:

The first and most obvious one is that there's a tradition of gun ownership in the United States and there's also a Constitutional amendment that guarantees it. So when one is making the case, it's easy to appeal to the individual liberties that have been in place since the beginning of the Republic. But on a political basis, the answer as far as I can see it is this is really a bi-partisan pursuit...I think it's 31 percent of Democrats who own guns and the NRA nationally has a much higher approval rating, for example, than does the President.

Meanwhile, Charles also has the cover story for the most recent print edition of National Review on the court fight between Michael Mann and Mark Steyn:
