100K Ice Cream Bars Recalled In Illinois, 22 Other States
If you recently grabbed a box or two of ice cream bars (because it's summertime and that's what you do), I hate to be the one to break it to you, but...you might have to throw it all out immediately.
It's the time of year when we're far more likely to reach for something cold or frozen to enjoy, rather than seeking out something to warm us up on a cold Illinois day, so have all the hot soup you want, but make sure you check your freezer for these ice cream bars that are being recalled for one of the most common reasons for a food-based product recall: Possible Listeria contamination.
As we've witnessed with previous recalls like last year's Boar's Head meat recall, listeria/listeriosis is nothing to trifle with. The 2024 recall of Boar's Head meats was linked to the largest listeriosis outbreak in the US since 2011, and led to over 60 hospitalizations and 10 deaths.
The CDC estimates there are around 1,600 listeriosis cases every year in the US, leading to around 260 annual deaths. Listeriosis is particularly concerning for the elderly, immunocompromised people, and especially pregnant women.
The FDA Has Classified This Ice Cream Bar Recall As A Class II Recall
The FDA uses three classes when classifying recalls:
- Class I Recall: A situation where there is a reasonable probability that use or exposure will cause serious adverse health conditions or death.
- Class II Recall: A product may cause temporary or medically reversible health problems, or the likelihood of serious harm is remote.
- Class III Recall: A product that is unlikely to cause any adverse health reaction, but violates FDA/USDA regulations.
