Pizza Recall Now Covers Ten States, Including Illinois
"What do you like on your pizza" can be a somewhat loaded question, depending on who you ask.
There are a lot of pizza toppings that show up on “favorites” lists. You've got pepperoni, sausage, onions, bacon, green peppers, ham, anchovies, maybe even pineapple if you’re feeling controversial. But metal fragments? Yeah…that’s not cracking anyone’s top ten.
A recall involving HelloFresh pizza products has been issued across 10 states, including Illinois, after concerns that some items may contain small pieces of metal. The issue traces back not to the crust or cheese, but to an ingredient most people wouldn’t think twice about: slow-roasted tomatoes, of all things.
This Has Been Classified As A Class II Recall By The US Food And Drug Administration (FDA)
The recall was initiated by North Carolina-based food manufacturer Bakkavor back in January and was later classified by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as a Class II recall, meaning the products could cause temporary or medically reversible health effects if consumed.
Here's how the classes of recalls differ, according to the FDA's website:
- Class I recall: a situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.
- Class II recall: a situation in which use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.
- Class III recall: a situation in which use of or exposure to a violative product is not likely to cause adverse health consequences.
In total, about 2,300-plus cases of pizza are part of the recall, along with more than 23,000 cases of related focaccia bread products sold under various brand names. The affected items were distributed in Illinois and nine other states, including Michigan, Texas, Florida, and California, and in some cases shipped directly to customers through meal kit deliveries.
Here's What To Look For
The specific product in question is the HelloFresh Basil Pesto & Mozzarella Pizza, and there are four key lot numbers consumers should check:
- Lot 20367483 (Use By: 6/29/26)
- Lot 20367483 (Use By: 6/30/26)
- Lot 20377537 (Use By: 9/4/26)
- Lot 20377821 (Use By: 9/5/26)
The good news is that no injuries have been reported so far. Still, the advice is simple, if you’ve got one of these pizzas in your fridge or freezer, don’t take chances. Toss it or return it for a refund.
