Minnesota City Now One of Worst in U.S. For Mail Carrier Dog Bites
It's a list that we would likely NOT to be included on, but one Minnesota city is now included on the list of cities with the most dog attacks on postal service employees.
These days, many of us have become much more familiar with our local Minnesota postal service employees and workers (along with our UPS and Fed-Ex delivery drivers too) thanks to all those home deliveries they've been making due to all that online shopping we've been doing over the past few years.
And while you might think that the 'dogs biting the mail carrier' thing is just a myth, it's not. It's a very real occurrence and, sadly, one that happens too often-- especially in this city here in the Land of 10,000 Lakes.
In a recent release, the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) says that incidents involving dog attacks on USPS employees rose to more than 5,800 cases last year across the country. And, as a part of their 2024 National Dog Bite Awareness Campaign, they just released the list of U.S. cities where dog attacks are the most prevalent-- which includes one in Minnesota.

According to the USPS, the consequences of a dog attack can be painful, both for the employee who was bitten, but also for the owner of the dog who can often be held responsible for medical bills, lost wages, uniform replacement costs, and pain and suffering for the employee.
And, USPS says those dog attacks can be expensive:
According to the latest estimates from the Insurance Information Institute, the average cost per insurance claim for a dog bite is $64,555!
Los Angeles, California tops the list of 30 U.S. Cities with the Most Dog Attacks, followed by Houston, Chicago, St. Louis and Cleveland rounding out the top five. Minnesota's only entry on the list is Minneapolis, which came in ranked 15th in the latest USPS data. Check out the full list below:
