The changing of seasons in Illinois usually mean a couple of things.

  1. People are happier.
  2. Beer gardens are open.
  3. Construction season begins in earnest.
  4. Police start to really crack down on stupid driving.

And judging by the number of emails I received from them this morning, they're not messing around in 2022.

Traffic citations were down the last couple years with people not driving because of the pandemic and police not pulling people over.... because of the pandemic.

Well, the pandemic is apparently over, or the Illinois State Police needs to raise some funds, because this is the list of emails I received this morning announcing their summer targets.

That's 6 emails in 10 minutes. Stalker behavior if you ask me.

They all basically say the same thing but these were the highlights of what you DON"T want to be doing this summer.

DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE:

I'm not sure if you know this but drinking and driving is bad.

Roadside safety checks (RSCs) will be popping up around the area. Ubers are too cheap to get hit with a DUI. Be smart.

DON'T BE DISTRACTED WHILE DRIVING:

This one is honestly probably a bigger problem than drinking and driving. You probably know the basics but this is specifically what police will be looking for:

  • All drivers are prohibited from reading, sending, or receiving text messages or communication, and from browsing the internet.
  • All drivers are prohibited from using handheld electronic communication devices.
  • Drivers under the age of 18 are prohibited from using any cellphone, even hands-free.
  • All drivers are prohibited from using any cellphone, even hands-free, while in school speed zones and work zones.
  • School bus drivers are not permitted to use any type of cellphone, even hands-free.
  • It is illegal to us a cellphone of rake photos or videos on wireless devices when driving within 500 feet of an emergency scene.

Just put your cellphone in the glove box to be safe.

DON'T BE UNSECURE IN YOUR CAR

We're not talking about your emotions here. We're talking about seatbelts. Both for you and young people in the car. Child restraint use will be a point of emphasis this summer. Plus, just put on your seatbelt. You don't want to be a dummy.

DON'T SPEED:

This is probably the very first rule of the road you learned and somehow it is probably the most violated. You know if you're speeding. Obviously keep up with the flow of traffic, but don't push it.

These are all rules that everyone knows, but this is a little reminder that a few more eyes might be on you this summer while you're on the road.
