Illinois Lawmakers Return to Capitol for a New Go at Budget
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Both chambers of the Illinois General Assembly are returning to Springfield to continue wrestling over a state budget deficit.
The Senate will meet Tuesday to hear testimony on the impact of a state-imposed freeze on local property taxes. That's one of the issues Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner is pushing.
The Legislature left town at the end of its regular spring session last month and left behind a spending plan at least $3 billion in the red. Rauner says he won't deal with Democratic lawmakers on the budget until he gets approval of his pro-business agenda.
Besides a property-tax freeze, the governor wants reforms to lower the cost of workers' compensation insurance. The House adopted a plan to do that last Thursday, but Rauner says it doesn't make enough changes.
