New Frozen Pizza Recall Affects Illinois And Two Other States
If seeing the headline telling you that there's yet another food product recall made you think "Wow, have we seen a lot of food recalls this year, or is it my imagination?" don't worry, because you're right.
According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), food product recalls have been on the rise over the last few years, and 2023 just happened to be the largest year for recalls since the pandemic. One thing to take note of is that the amount of recalls we've seen post-pandemic are still less than the record-setting amount of recalls in both 2015 and 2017.
An FDA spokesperson told Today.com:
There may be a perception that the amount of recalls has increased particularly if one recall event has a large number of affected products, however the number of food related recall events in 2024 is generally consistent with years past.
Still, it seems like there have been a lot more.
Before We Get To The Frozen Pizza Recall Information You'll Need, Let's Take A Quick Look Back At Some Of The Other Food Products That We Saw Recalled In 2024
Here's just a partial list of food products recalled by the FDA and the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) over the last 12 months:
- Cucumbers due to risk of salmonella
- Ready-to-eat meat products over listeria risk
- Whole and baby carrots due to E. coli contamination
- Raw ground beef due to E. coli risk
- Smoked salmon due to listeria risk
- Eggs due to risk of salmonella
- Frozen waffles and pancakes due to risk of listeria
- Ready-to-eat chicken and turkey due to risk of listeria
- Sliced deli meat over listeria risk
And now, frozen pizzas.
According To The FDA's Website, The Reason For This Particular Recall Is Not Because Of E. Coli Or Listeria, Or Even Salmonella
It's because of a "possible plastic foreign contaminant:"
The product was distributed in Illinois, Minnesota, and Wisconsin to retail grocery stores. The affected product, Connie’s Thin Crust Cheese Pizza, has expired as of 11/27/2024.
This recall alert, which is being conducted under the full cooperation of the FDA, is being issued out of an abundance of caution in the event that a product remains in a consumer’s freezer. The pizzas are no longer available for purchase. Consumers who have purchased these Pizzas are urged not to consume them. They should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase for a refund.
Here's the information you need to check the freezer at home and take action.
