Here in Illinois, we'll take good news wherever and whenever we can get it. So, with that in mind, those of us who are planning on hitting the road this summer can look forward to lower gas prices.

According to AAA Chicago,

Illinois gas prices are dropping heading into the summer driving season. The average price in Illinois for an unleaded gallon of gasoline is $2.42, down $.03 from last month’s and last year’s price per gallon. In Indiana, the average price is $2.37, up $.13 from a month ago but even with last year’s price. Nationally, the average is $2.38, which is even with the average prices last month and up slightly from last year.

We're not talking about colossal savings, but every penny helps.

“Nationally, the demand for gasoline as the summer driving season kicks in has caused an uptick in gas prices,” said Beth Mosher, director of public affairs for AAA Chicago. “While Illinois and Indiana prices have been fairly stable, they could follow the national trend and rise in the coming weeks due to higher demand.” The average price for May in Illinois was $2.40, a decrease of $.07 from the previous month but still $.02 higher from last year’s prices. In northern Indiana in May, the average price was $2.31 which was $.09 lower than last month and $.03 higher than last year.

Here are some May numbers from around the Rockford area:
