In case you were unaware, thanks to President Ronald Reagan, July is National Ice Cream Month, and the third Sunday of July is National Ice Cream Day. President Reagan recognized ice cream as a fun and nutritional food that is enjoyed by over 90% of the American population, and he called on Americans to observe these events with "appropriate ceremonies and activities."

Alrighty then, let's get to the ceremonies and activities part. I'm looking at a press release from our friends at Winnebago Buy Local, and it looks like they've got a great time lined up for you and the family on July 19th.

Winnebago Buy Local welcomes the public to The Third Annual Totally Local Ice Cream Social, happening on “SUNDAE” July 19, 2015, 1-4 p.m. at the Lombardi Club, 209 Olive Street, Rockford, IL.

“What better way to celebrate National Ice Cream Day than with local Ice Cream and Local Businesses?” says Winnebago Buy Local’s Director Lauren Davis. “Winnebago County LOVES local businesses and ice cream, so we came up with a way to combine these two great things into one great summertime event, while also helping a local not-for profit group at the same time!”

If you're thinking that this event is strictly ice-cream, you'll be pleased to know there's a lot more than that.

Besides the delicious locally made ice cream from Rockton’s Dairy Haüs, root beer for floats from Rockford Brewing Company, and coffee from Javamania Coffee Roastery, there will be dozens of ice cream toppings coming from local businesses to make your favorite Sundae concoctions. Also sponsored by North Park Barber Shop, Rock Valley Compounding Pharmacy, and P.C. Tech 2U, Inc., the Totally Local Ice Cream Social will have Sock-Hop music from Joe Locke of Hits DJ, a photo booth from Special Moments Photo Booth, water from Home Environment Center, and vegan “ice cream” from Bookworm Alt Bake. Face painting and children’s entertainment by magician Johnny Silver, BeeBop the Balloon Artist, and Swish the Bulldog Mascot will make this be a fun, family-friendly event again this year.

It's only $2 to get in, with the proceeds benefiting In Youth We Trust, a youth philanthropy program of the Community Foundation of Northern Illinois.

“With many youth not always having direct exposure to the concept of how “buying local” can help them and their community, we think this is one positive way to help connect area youths with local business owners,” says Davis. “We also like how ‘In Youth We Trust’ teaches grant making, volunteerism, and leadership skills to today’s youth, preparing them to be the positive change of tomorrow: what a great way to give back to our future leaders while also celebrating National Ice Cream Day!”
