Rockford's blood reserves are low at an alarming level and health officials have warned of the possible danger.

You might think "low" amounts of universal blood may not be as bad as it sounds, and you would be correct. It's actually much worse and a serious problem.

The reason their reserves are so low is because of Memorial Day weekend, which is a notorious for accidents and emergency room visits, according to RRVBC.org. With that said, they desperately need O negative blood. Donating takes about an hour and can save up to three lives.

Donating blood is safe and simple.  You are most likely able to donate if you are at least 17 years old (16 year olds may donate with parental consent), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in general good health.  Persons taking medications are not necessarily disqualified.

Donation centers are located in Belvidere, Freeport, and Rockford. For hours and directions, blood drive locations, or to schedule an appointment, click here.
