If you went with 215,000, congratulations or your incredibly lucky...I mean great guess. According to global data platform Statista, the world will be approaching a quarter million hospitals by the end of 2026.

A new study by Newsweek.com took a look at the hospital situation in 30 countries around the world to come up with their rankings of the World's Best Hospitals 2025, and Illinois makes a really nice showing on that Newsweek list. Here are the countries that Newsweek examined to make their determinations:

Overall, The Newsweek Study Took A Look At Hundreds Of Thousands Of Hospitals All Over The World To Come Up With What They Determined Are The 250 Best On Earth

Of the top ten hospitals in the world, does it surprise you to learn that four of them are in the United States? It's true, and not only that, The number-one and number-two hospitals are also in America. Here are the top ten best hospitals in the world, according to the Newsweek study:

  • No. 2: Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, Ohio
  • No. 3: Toronto General - University Health Network, Toronto, Canada
  • No. 4: The Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, Maryland

  • No. 6: Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts

Now Let's Take A Look At The 3 Illinois Hospitals That Landed On The Best Hospitals In The World 2025 List, And What Position They Hold On That List

The 3 Illinois hospitals that landed on the best in the world list didn't land in the top ten or top 25, but all of them show up in the top 150 on the list of 250 hospitals overall.

Here's who Newsweek.com gave the positive nods to in Illinois:

  • No. 38: Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Chicago
  • No. 105: Rush University Medical Center, Chicago
  • No. 126: University of Chicago Medical Center, Chicago

Hospitals were scored based on an online survey of about 85,000 medical experts and publicly available data from post-hospitalization patient surveys on their general satisfaction, Newsweek said.

Hygiene and patient/doctor ratios were also considered, along with a Statista survey on whether hospitals use “Patient Reported Outcome Measures,” which are surveys filled out by patients about their experience.
