Woodstock Honored for Historic Preservation
WOODSTOCK, Ill. (AP) — A northern Illinois community has been recognized for blending historic preservation and tourism.
The federal Advisory Council on Historic Preservation announced Monday that Woodstock has been named a Preserve America Community. It's the 11th Illinois city to receive the designation.
The Woodstock Square Historic District is home to the Woodstock Opera House, an 1899 structure listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and the 1857 Old McHenry Courthouse.
The picturesque district was the setting for the 1993 movie "Groundhog Day" starring Bill Murray. Each year visitors flock to the area for a week of events that commemorate the city's role in the film. The city's historic preservation commission also offers a walking tour of the historic square.
