I just read the results of a study at USFoods.com on the frequency of people ordering food to be delivered versus the frequency of people deciding to head out to eat their food inside an actual restaurant. Let's check a few stats to see if they match up with the way you do things.

The average person in Illinois and across the United States:

  • orders food delivery 4.5 times per month
  • dines out 3 times per month
  • 57% prefer ordering delivery (or takeout)
  • 43% prefer eating in a restaurant
  • 54% are cool with waiting a half hour or more for their delivery

As to why we seem to prefer the delivery option:

  • 76% like eating at home
  • 75% like the convenience
  • 50% say they do it so they can watch TV or movies
  • 49% like not having to cook
  • 32% want to be able to wear comfortable clothes

Here Are The Numbers On How Much Is Coming Out Of Our Wallets In Illinois For Food Delivery, And What Our Midwestern Neighbors Are Spending On It, Too

I guess we don't have to feel too badly about things, after all. The national average for yearly spending on food delivery is $1,566.57, but here in Illinois, we're well below that with an average of $1,316.84 per year, according to the UpgradedPoints.com study.

I mentioned taking a look at our Midwestern neighbors, and we really should because the highest spending and the lowest spending on food delivery per year are done by two states that border Illinois.

Iowans are the spending kings and queens of the Midwest, shelling out, on average, about $3,366 annually.

Iowans spend the most on delivery per order at $45.11, which is 27.4% higher than the national average. They also order delivery the most on average (6.2 times per month).

Bringing up the rear, and spending the least each year on food delivery is Wisconsin, with an average of $938. Wisconsin residents also order food delivery the least in America, with 2.5 orders per month.
