As we turn our attention toward our servicemen and women, WROK is putting a spotlight on one the military's best kept secrets: Fisher House.

Fisher House Foundation helps families stay together during a medical crisis with no-cost comfort homes on VA and military medical center grounds. The organization has been around for 25 years and just opened its 65th Fisher House at Camp Pendleton, Calif.

Families can reach loved ones quickly on last-minute flights with the foundation's Hero Miles program, using donated frequent flyer miles. At hospitals where a Fisher House doesn't exist yet, Hotels for Heroes uses donated loyalty points to find lodging for families. Fisher House Foundation spends a remarkable 95 cents of each donated dollar on program initiatives, continually earning the highest ratings from charity watchdogs.

This is all really great stuff, but it can't be done without the continued help of supporters from across the country.

That's one of the reasons why WROK is bringing you a Fisher House radio special on Memorial Day, entitiled "A Hero's Best Medicine". The program will share the role that Fisher House plays in military heroes’ recovery, giving family a safe place to stay just steps from their hospital rooms. Tune in Monday from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m to hear the stories that define the Foundation's mission.
