Sam’s Club To Dump Checkouts, Go With AI In Illinois, Nationally
Walking into a store, grabbing a cart, wandering the aisles and picking out items, then heading for the checkout to have the cashier ring up your purchases and tell you how much money you owe for those purchases is like, so last century, right?
I worked in a grocery store in the 20th century, so I know how things rolled back in the day...and I didn't think it was such a bad way of going about things. Many would agree with me, but there are lots of others who don't agree, and spend a considerable amount of time trying to come up with a better way of doing things using today's advanced technology.
Many of those looking for alternatives have decided that using technology and artificial intelligence (AI) will streamline the tiresome shopping process we've used as a society for a long time.

Walmart's Sam's Club Is Planning To Do Away With Checkouts In All Of Their Stores, And Replacing Them With Phone Technology And AI
Sam's Club aims to get rid of both cashier-assisted checkouts and self-checkout kiosks in their 600 stores, and instead go with their newly-developed Scan & Go Shopping system.
The retail giant plans to phase out traditional checkouts across its 600 stores and create a friction-free shopping experience which will include customers scanning goods on the go with an app and then having and AI scanner verify the goods as customers leave. The technology would eliminate the need for receipt checks at the door.
Sam's Club first implemented the technology back in April of last year, and says that they're ready to roll it out to all of their store locations within the very near future.
Here's A Basic Explanation Of How Scan & Go Shopping Will Work At Sam's Club
Depending on your comfort and familiarity with technology, it shouldn't be a huge shock to the systems of shoppers, although it may take a bit of getting used to.
According to Newsweek.com, these are the basics:
- First off, you'll need to download the Sam's Club Scan & Go Shopping App
- Go to the store, grab a cart, and scan the items you wish to purchase as you put them into your cart.
- When you've gotten all the items you were looking for, complete the purchase and pay on the app
- You'll then receive a digital receipt on the app
- Exit the store (as you reach the exit, AI-powered cameras will scan your cart from the top and sides to make sure that you, the shopper, are being straight about your purchases)
