You'll soon be seeing all sorts of strange creatures wandering around Illinois thanks to Halloween. But that eight-foot, hairy figure reeking of musk and standing motionless among the trees nearby? Well, let's not automatically assume it's somebody's Halloween costume.

Especially when you consider that Illinois ranks fifth in the nation for reported Bigfoot sightings!

According to the Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization (BFRO), which tracks reports of alleged Sasquatch encounters, Illinois has more than 300 incidents on record. Only Washington, California, Florida, and Ohio rank higher.

And no, these aren't sightings of somebody's Uncle Gary stumbling home from the Halloween party.

Let's Get To Where Illinoisans Are Seeing This Legendary Cryptid

Madison County takes the top spot among Illinois counties, with 24 reports in the BFRO data cited in earlier 2025 tallies. Jackson County follows with 20, Cook County has 16, Macoupin County has 15, and Sangamon County rounds out the top five with 13.

Downstate Illinois seems to get plenty of attention, particularly around wooded areas and river corridors. The forests of Southern Illinois' Shawnee National Forest totally provide the kind of scenery that gets Bigfoot enthusiasts excited.

Central Illinois has its own Sasquatch history, too. One notable report involved a motorist who described a massive, upright creature crossing Route 78 near the Sangamon River. Other reports from around the state describe tall, heavily furred figures moving on two legs, sometimes near rural roads and wooded areas.

And what about the reason for all these sightings? Illinois has more woodland, river valleys, and secluded terrain than people who think our state consists entirely of cornfields might imagine. Meanwhile, a growing community of Bigfoot fans continues to investigate reports and share stories.

There Is One Small Hiccup In All Of This

That would be: there's no scientifically verified evidence that Bigfoot exists. These numbers reflect reports collected by a research organization, not confirmed encounters with an undiscovered species.

Still, with Bigfoot festivals, local investigators, and hundreds of reported sightings, Illinois has certainly earned its place on the Sasquatch map.

So, this Halloween, keep your eyes open. That rustling in the woods could be a deer, a bear passing through, or somebody taking their costume a little too seriously.

Or, according to some Illinois residents, it could be Bigfoot.

If you see one, please let us know. We'd love to hear the story!
