ROCKFORD, Ill. (AP) — The Rockford School Board has approved a $250 million facilities plan that will have some students changing schools as soon as fall 2015.

The Rockford Register Star reports the board voted Tuesday to close eight schools, build two new ones and make improvements at the district's other 38 facilities. The plan also includes consolidating early childhood education into four centers and moving bilingual classes closer to where bilingual students live.

The district says it will only spend money on two new schools if voters approve a referendum in November. Voters approved building additions and equipment repair in 2012.

The plan is the largest one-time investment in school facilities in the district's history. Some construction has already started to add cafeterias at elementary schools and field houses at high schools.
