
Rockford’s New Fire Chief Has Been Appointed After Unanimous Vote
A woman who has been faithfully serving the Rockford Fire Department for 16 years has been promoted to Chief.

According to the press release, the City of Rockford's Fire and Police Commission unanimously voted to appoint Rebecca Tyo as the next Chief of the Rockford Fire Department.
Tyo was selected after a competitive process that involved five highly qualified finalists, all of whom brought years of professional experience and leadership to the table, according to the press release.
A Career Built on Dedication and Service
Rebecca Tyo began her career with Rockford Fire in 2009 and has spent the past 16 years advancing through the ranks, holding roles that included Firefighter, Firefighter/Paramedic, Lieutenant, Fire Training Coordinator, and Captain.
Besides her on-the-job experience with the Rockford Fire Department, Tyo also holds both a Bachelor's and a Master's Degree in Kinesiology, as well as several other prestigious certifications.

Tylo replaces Michele Pankow, who served as the Rockford Fire Chief for nearly four years until July 2025, when she left to become the Illinois State Fire Marshal.
