2026 Stateline Heatwave: Here’s Where The Cooling Centers Are

We can't make up our minds. When it's hot, we want it cold. When it's cold, we want it hot.

Okay, so it's hot. Really hot. Don't-screw-around-out-in-the-heat-or-you-could-have-a-big-problem hot. So hot that cities that care about their community's well-being are doing something about it.

We're staring down temperatures in the low to mid 90s with even higher heat indices over the next few days (105 to 115), and several heat advisories have been issued, so cooling centers in Rockford, Loves Park, Belvidere, and Freeport are going to be literal lifesavers.

In All Seriousness, This Kind Of Heat Can Quickly Become Deadly, So Share The Information With Someone Who Might Need It

In 2021, a record-breaking heatwave in the Pacific Northwest killed over 200 people in the U.S. and nearly 300 in Canada, so we know that providing relief from crazy hot conditions can and does save lives.

To prevent fatality numbers like that from happening here, cooling centers open up when there's a warning or excessive heat advisory issued by the National Weather Service.

Here Are The Cooling Centers Currently Operating In Winnebago And Boone Counties

Like I said, even if you don't need a cooling center, there are plenty of people who do, so sharing information is key here.

In Winnebago County, several locations in Rockford are open during the day.

• Carpenter’s Place, located at 1149 Railroad Avenue, is open Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Fridays from 8:15 a.m. to 2 p.m.
• The Rockford Rescue Mission at 715 W. State Street is open daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with 24/7 access available for overnight shelter.
• The City of Rockford Health and Human Services office at 612 N. Church Street is open Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Fridays until 4 p.m.
• Brooke Road United Methodist Church at 1404 Brooke Road is also serving as a cooling site Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

In Boone County:

• The Belvidere Public Safety Building at 615 N. Main Street, which is open daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
• A state-approved site is also available at the Belvidere Tollway Oasis along I-90, just east of the Belvidere Toll Plaza, which is open 24 hours a day.

There Are Also Cooling Centers In Stephenson County

• The Freeport Public Library at 100 East Douglas Street is open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., though it will be closed for Independence Day.
• The Lincoln Mall on West Galena Avenue is open daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., but closed Sundays.
• The Freeport Division of Rehabilitation Services office at 1828 S. West Avenue operates weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., with holiday hours possibly varying.
