Shivering? Check Out These All-Time Rockford Weather Records
People get really excited when some records get broken, especially when it comes to sports. When it comes to extremes in temperatures, the excitement of a record being broken is usually replaced with anger, despair, and a hell of a lot of shivering and shaking.
Take this morning for example. Our temperature earlier this morning was -11 degrees. Add in the 10-13 miles per hour winds to the mix, and you get a record-breaking -30 degrees, which was enough to break the record for cold temperature on this date with no snow on the ground.
I didn't see any excitement. Just anger and shivering.
How Does The Weather We're Currently Experiencing Match Up With Some Our Past Weather Records, Anyway?
Although snowfall has been noticeably absent this winter, weather-watchers have been going crazy about potential wind-chill (or, "feels like") numbers, so I thought I'd take a look through some of the Rockford area's records for snowfall and bone-chilling cold to see how our current weather matches up.
Not that what happened in the past is going to make you feel any warmer dealing with these extreme cold temperatures, but let's take a look anyway.
Let's Get Started With A Winter That Most People In The Area Who Are 45 Years Old And Older Remember Very Well
The winter of 78-79 saw 74.5 inches of snow dropped on the stateline, with the snow reaching a depth of 27 inches in January of 1979. Those of us old enough will probably recall shoveling driveways and sidewalks--then heading up to do the roof. After my dad made me do our house, the neighbors thought I did such a good job that my dad sent me over to do their houses, too.
I finished up January of 1979 with over $1000 in my pocket just from shoveling.
For better or for worse, we just don't seem to have those kinds of massive snowfalls around here anymore, as Rockford has averaged 36.7 inches of snow per season for the last 30 years. That number is 14.3 inches above the national average, 22.4 inches.
Here Are Some Other Notable Numbers About Rockford's Weather, Both Hot And Cold

One more note about snow gathering on rooftops: at least we don't have the sorts of adventures that others around the country and the world have to deal with.
