I've been asked before why I write about scams in the Rockford area so often. Usually the question begins with something like "We don't really have that many scams going on in the Rockford area, do we?"

Here's the thing. We do have that many scams happening in Rockford and surrounding areas, and the Rockford Better Business Bureau's (BBB) Dennis Horton will back that up.

During Spring Scam Season, The Rockford BBB Receives Up To 3 Complaint Calls An Hour

The Rockford Better Business Bureau says scammers are opening up shop in and around the Rockford area with seasonal ploys to steal your money, identity, and trash your overall confidence in the marketplace. All before your lawn has been mowed for the first time this year.

Rockford BBB's Dennis Horton:

“Con artists are inventive and bold. Spring gives scammers a range of new opportunities. With warmer weather, people are thrilled to be able to start more outdoor home improvement and repair projects, but you have to be careful to reduce your risk of scams. You could encounter a scammer via text or email, on the phone, online, or even in person. The losses can be devastating."

Here Are The Spring Scams That The Rockford Area Should Be On Guard Against

Think of all the things that can go wrong and need repairs around your house. The list that just flashed into your head is pretty much the list of things scammers go after:

  • Roofing
  • Plumbing
  • Electrical
  • Dry Wall
  • Paint
  • HVAC Systems
  • Storm Damage (whether it really exists or not)

With the arrival of Spring, we're sure to get strong winds and storms from time to time. "Storm Chaser" scam artists look to enrich themselves while screwing you over with shoddy or non-existent repairs.

To protect yourself, make sure you're wary of high-pressure sales tactics and how to say no. Also, for any project, get multiple written estimates instead of going with the first person to contact you. Always ask for references, and never pay for any home repairs up front.
