An extremely rare split-colored lobster has turned up off the coast of Maine. As you can see below, the orange-brown creature literally is half-and-half in its coloring in most of its body.

The Press Herald reports the unusual lobster arrived at Pine Point Fisherman’s Co-Op in Scarborough.

The Lobster Institute tells us blue and orange lobsters are a bit more common than the split-colored versions. The chance of finding a split-colored lobster is pegged at one in 50 million. Only the albino lobster is rarer, with the chances of catching it at one in 100 million.

According to Fox News, a similar lobster was caught in Maine two years ago. It was donated to the Gulf of Maine Research Institute by Ship to Shore Lobster Co. in Owl’s Head.
