An Early 2025 Spring For Illinois? Here’s What Forecasters Say
Maybe we're just a little strange here in Illinois. Give us a solid couple of weeks of sub-zero temperatures and wind chill readings in January, and suddenly we're ready to start talking about just when the warmer temperatures and springtime flowers are going to start showing up around here.
Weather forecasters from around the country usually start publishing their predictions for the coming springtime right around this time of year, and as usual, there are definitely varying opinions on what spring will look and feel like for Illinois and the rest of the nation.
Old farmers may feel differently than young farmers, and one weather source may being yelling "warmer" while another one shouts "snow and cold." Regardless, let's take a look at what forecaster expectations are for Spring 2025 in Illinois.
Just Like So Many Other Things, The Answers You Get About What Kind Of Spring Weather Illinois Can Expect Totally Depends On Who You're Talking To
According to the National Oceanic And Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), a good chunk of the country from Arizona to Maine should expect above-average temperatures over the next 3 months. Another part of the country including Washington, Oregon, Idaho, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming and Nebraska is looking at a much-colder start to spring.
Here in Illinois, where we are tucked into the middle of the two, predictions are basically 50-50. NOAA says that the Midwest-Great Lakes Region has an equal chance of being warmer or colder.
The bottom-line from NOAA is that Illinois has an equal chance at three outcomes this spring:
- Above average temps
- Below average temps
- Typically average temps
Here Are A Couple Of Other Takes On What Spring 2025 Will Be Like In Illinois
The Old Farmer's Almanac follows along with the NOAA forecast to a point. The Old Farmer's Almanac is predicting three different types of spring weather for our state.
- Most of the top two-thirds of the state of Illinois (including Chicago and most of Northern Illinois) will be getting "normal" temperatures.
- The southern part of Illinois will be facing cooler temperatures overall
- A small part of western Illinois will be warmer than normal
One thing that our entire state has in common when it comes to springtime weather is that, for this year at least, the entire state of Illinois will be enjoying a drier spring than normal.
