Illinois Tornado Wipes Out Nationally Known Corvette Museum
We're number-one in the nation in 2026.
It's always nice to see Illinois ranked number-one at something. Unfortunately, being number-one in tornadoes isn't exactly the kind of championship trophy anyone wants to toss into their trophy case.
Illinois currently leads the nation in tornado activity in 2026, and by a wide margin. Depending on whether you're looking at confirmed tornadoes or preliminary reports, Illinois has logged somewhere between 145 and 190 tornadoes so far this year, already shattering the state's previous annual record, and we're not even through June yet. Mississippi currently sits in second place, while Texas rounds out the top three.
One of those many Illinois tornadoes left behind a particularly painful loss for car enthusiasts last week.

Say Goodbye To A Legendary Car Museum
A powerful tornado that struck Effingham County last Wednesday, June 17th, destroyed the legendary Mid-America Motorworks MY Garage Museum, a destination that had become a pilgrimage site for Corvette fans from across the country.
The museum housed a super-impressive collection of classic Corvettes and automotive memorabilia assembled over decades by founder Michael Yager and his family. When the tornado tore through the property, the museum building was essentially leveled, leaving behind piles of debris where rows of prized automobiles once stood.
The destruction hit especially hard because the museum wasn't just another roadside attraction. For generations of Corvette owners, collectors, and racing fans, the Effingham facility was a must-see stop along Interstate 70. Visitors traveled from all over the United States to admire rare models, learn Corvette history, and celebrate America's sports car.

The Museum May Be Gone, But The People Behind It Survived The Storm
The good news is that no fatalities were reported at the museum, and company officials have already expressed determination to rebuild and continue serving the Corvette community. Still, replacing a building is one thing.
Replacing decades of automotive history is another.
As Illinois continues adding to its already record-breaking tornado total, the destruction in Effingham serves as another reminder that tornado statistics aren't just numbers on a weather chart. Behind every tornado count is a damaged home, a disrupted community, or a beloved piece of Americana that can disappear in a matter of seconds.
