Before the summer months begin, the OSF Saint Anthony Center for Cancer Care is holding a free skin cancer screening this Saturday for anyone who might be at risk.

The screening will take place Saturday, May 2 from 8 a.m. to noon in the Ambulatory Care Center  on the first floor of the medical center at 5666 East State Street in Rockford. Again, the screening is free but space is very limited. Appointments are required by calling 815-227-2624.

At the event, dermatologists will check moles or lesions to determine if further medical evaluation and possible intervention are recommended. According to a press release, early warning signs of skin cancer include:

...enlarging and darkening moles; changes in the color of an existing mole, particularly if red, white and blue pigmentation spreads to surrounding skin; changes in the consistency or shape of a pigmented spot; a red area with a scaly, crusted surface that doesn’t heal; small, shiny, firm raised growths on the skin that may ulcerate or form scabs in the center; or signs of inflammation on skin that surrounds an existing mole.

Again, if you'd like to attend the free screening you're asked to call and make an appointment at 815-227-2624.
