This is the first weekend in a while with no animated feature films on the slate for Rockford area drive-ins. With the appetite for child fare apparently quenched, the area drive-ins have shifted their focus to action movies.
There is one new movie on the schedule this week, Free Guy starring Ryan Reynolds. I'll post the official trailer down below but you really should check out this promo he did for the movie as Deadpool, the superhero he plays in the Marvel universe with another character from Thor: Ragnarok, Korg. It seriously is one of the best movie promos I've seen.
The weather looks like it will finally break by Friday and will be perfect for a drive to the country to take in a movie. Here's what's playing.
SkyVu Drive-In - Monroe, WI
The website says this is the FINAL WEEKEND but then they also say that they'll be playing Jungle Cruise next weekend. We'll have to find out which one's true next week.
Anyway. As you can see they'll be starting with last week's box office underperformer, The Suicide Squad.
Then get scary with The Conjuring 3: The Devil Made Me Do It. Not my cup of tea, but I understand the audience appeal.
Midway Drive-In - Sterling, IL
They will also be sticking with The Suicide Squad for the first feature but will instead follow it up with Mortal Kombat, which has had decent reviews considering how bad it could have been.
Route 34 Drive-In - Mendota, IL
Route 34 will stick with the Disney ride turned movie Jungle Cruise.
And then, playing second in the opening weekend is Ryan Reynolds Free Guy.
Highway 18 - Jefferson, WI
The Highway 18 will be playing the same double feature as SkyVu with the double feature of The Suicide Squad and The Conjuring 3: The Devil Made Me Do It. Again, very scary. Proceed with caution.
NOTE: We usually include the McHenry Drive-in in the weekly roundup but they have not updated their website yet.
Shows start at dusk. Make sure you pack a blanket.
